The Padzieski Art Gallery at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center (The Center) will host “Michigan Cass Month….Cass and Beyond” from April 4 through 27. Curator James Puntigam has assembled an exhibit which highlights the work of 15 of the region’s cutting edge artists including such recognizable names as Alva, Burke, Evarts, Ferretti, Hendrick, Herbeck, Hogan, Hyde, Maugre, Mesko, Puntigam, Schneider, Sestok, Turner and Valdez.

An additional program in conjunction with the exhibit will take place at The Center on Wednesday, April 10 with a 7 p.m. showing of  “Works in Progress; ‘Images’ from Detroit’s Cass Corridor.” Directed by Kathryn Brackett Luchs and Shaun Bangert, the movie focuses on the alternative, inventive and personal approaches of artists living and working in Detroit during the late 60’s and through the 70’s. This time period is regarded as a significant in Detroit’s art history. Admission to the movie is free.

Artists' Society of Dearborn

Spring Exhibition

Opening Reception:  Thursday, March 7, 2002

The exhibition awards will be announced tonight at 7:45 P.M.

Juror Critique — March 26, 2002 — 7:00 P.M.

From a modest beginning in 1949, when 25 interested people gathered in Pansy Taylor's living room, the Artists' Society of Dearborn (ASD) has grown to its present size of close to 100 artists and aficionados. The name was soon changed to Art Institute of Dearborn, and again in 1960, to Dearborn Arts and Crafts. In 1999, in honor of the 50th Anniversary, the membership decided to reinstate the original name of the organization, The Artists' Society of Dearborn. Its goal then was the same as it is today: To enrich the cultural life of the community by stimulating interest in fine two-dimensional and three-dimensional art.

The Society is featured in two exhibits in this inaugural year at the Padzieski Art Gallery, October 2001 and March 2002. Prominent artists in the Detroit Area have juried both exhibits. Mary Stevenson was the juror for the October exhibit and Charles Pompilius is the juror for the current exhibit.

Mr. Pompilius studied art and received his undergraduate degree from Central Michigan University. He continued his studies at the Skowhegan Summer School of Painting and Sculpture at Skowhegan, Maine and received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa in 1984. Pompilius has taught in a number of institutions at the university level. He enjoys working in oils and painting the human figure in a number of settings. His work may be seen on the web site of the David Klein Gallery  the exhibit opened, Pompilius spoke to the ASD artists about what he would be looking for in judging this exhibit. ”I’ll be looking for composition, design and structure.” His advice, “Painting is mostly drawing. Do it a lot. What is design?…Unity with variety. Squint at everything. Look for basic shapes.”

Congratulations, to all the Award Recipients

The exhibition awards will be announced tonight at 7:45 P.M.

Seventh Annual Juried Photography Show

Opening Reception:  Thursday, February 7, 2002
7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Exhibit: February 7 thru March 2, 2002

The 7th Annual Photography Exhibit may prove to be one of our best yet. As this publication goes to press, internationally recognized photographer, Monte Nagler has just finished reviewing the submissions for the photography show in February.  “This has proven to be a very a difficult show to jury, he indicated. The works are very, very good and my selections for the Best of … categories are almost to numerous to limit to just 5 awards.” As a result of the quality of works submitted, Mr. Nagler recommended to the committee that Honorable Mention categories be added to the list.

About the Juror -- Monte Nagler ( www.montenagler.com ) began photographing seriously after studying with Ansel Adams. "It was during that period of intensive work that I realized that making photographs is a way to experience beauty instead of just looking at it," Nagler says. He believes that photographers should communicate feelings that are inside them. Through their photographs, a photographer should be saying: "This is what I saw and felt and I'd like to share that!"

You don’t want to miss this show.

The January exhibit in the Padzieski Art Gallery will feature an international artistic cast with a wide range of talent. While they all live and work with a connection to Michigan, their talents are rooted in cultures as varied as their heritage reflects. This unique cacophony of artisans follow the December success of Small in Scale and the beautiful Dolls of Japan and continues to reflect the high quality standards that demonstrate our cultural commitment to the Community. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to travel ONE WORLD through the art of SEVEN distinctively different ARTISTS.
